Open Source

My open source initiatives started 10 years ago when I was asked to build up a all in one financial inquiry system. I chose Linux+Apache+Postgresql+PHP and got the whole thing up and running in a fairly amount of time. It had 16 serial ports for dial in access and customers from all levels of government were able to use their windows machine to dial in with PPP connection and query stuff from IE browser. All the data were exported from the bank's mainframe and imported into Postgresql everyday. It's now trivial for those technologies but the way I could integrate stuff together with open source software and the fulfillment was just incredible. Then as I work more in both network and security field, I soon realize open source is the way to develope the technology and will help us to reach our business goals with so much freedom. From Snort, Nessus, Netsaint(Nagios) etc to Drupal, Ruby on Rails etc, I can always find the application and use them either as infrastructure pieces or as the management platform.

nice

And there's one of the mums right up inside the big hay container, having a good feed. I thought it was only the babies who could get up there, but she's managed it and looks perfectly at home. Social Bookmarking

I don't get to use too many

I don't get to use too many open source products, except for Mozilla and few others, but I am willing to try them more. I've heard they are more secure since passionate people around the world work day and night to cover any flaws so they really got my attention. I am really concerned regarding my system security and right now I intend to have a antivirus download free since buying one would cost me too much, so that's the reason I would be willing to try open source more often, it's cheaper and safer.
